How to make a YouTube thumbnail (from scratch)

Making a YouTube thumbnail means building the image first. Size, subject, text, export. Upload comes after.

This is the make-from-scratch path for a long-form custom. It is not the Studio swap guide. Start at 1280 × 720

Open a new canvas at **1280 × 720** pixels, **16:9**. That is the standard long-form thumbnail size.

YouTube also accepts larger 16:9 uploads (up to 4K in current help). File limits and the full spec live in [YouTube thumbnail size](/blog/youtube-thumbnail-size). Do not redesign the canvas mid-flow. Pick one size and stick to it.

Keep important faces and text inside the center of the frame. Mobile Suggested crops the edges hard.

One clear subject

Pick one thing the eye hits first. A face, a product, a prop. Not three competing heroes.

A face helps when the click is about a person or a reaction. Skip the face when the object is the story and the expression would fight it.

High contrast beats a busy background. If the subject disappears at phone size, simplify before you add text.

Add ≤5 words (that the title does not already say)

Write a short line that adds information. If the title already says it, leave the words off.

Five words or fewer is a useful ceiling. Bigger type. Fewer letters. The line has to survive at about 160 pixels wide in Suggested.

Skip full sentences. Skip restating the title. One claim, one question, or one contrast is enough.

Export JPG or PNG under Studio limits

Export as **JPG** or **PNG**. GIF also works, but a still custom is usually JPG or PNG.

Stay under Studio's file limits: **2 MB** if you upload from mobile, up to **50 MB** on desktop. Smaller files upload cleaner. See [YouTube thumbnail size](/blog/youtube-thumbnail-size) if you need the full limit list.

Check the export at phone width before you call it done. If the text fails there, fix it on the canvas.

Upload in YouTube Studio

The file is ready. Now put it on the video.

On a computer: YouTube Studio → Content → open the video (Details) → under **Thumbnail** click **Upload file** → **SAVE**. Full taps are in [how to change a YouTube thumbnail](/blog/how-to-change-youtube-thumbnail).

Soft check before you ship

If you want a second pass on clarity, text, and emotion, run the export through [Thumbly Score](/thumbly-score). Skip Score until the image exists. A blank canvas is not a thumbnail.
