How to fix a blurry YouTube thumbnail
Looked sharp in the editor. Soft after upload or on mobile. Fix the usual causes: upscale, over-compress, thin fonts, soft frame grabs. Keep 1280×720.

That is the usual blurry-thumb story. Soft edges. Mushy text. Fine at full size. Dead at feed size.

What "blurry" usually means
Not a broken upload. Soft edges and mushy text when the frame is about **168 to 360 pixels** wide. Studio shows the thumb large and alone. Viewers decide small, in a feed, on a phone.
If the file never uploaded, that is size or format. Start with [file size](/blog/youtube-thumbnail-file-size). This post assumes the file landed and still looks soft.
Cause 1: upscaled source
You started under **1280×720** and stretched. YouTube cannot invent detail. Faces and type go soft.
Always **downscale** from a larger still. Never upscale a phone screenshot or a tiny export into the canvas. Dims and 16:9 stay in [YouTube thumbnail size](/blog/youtube-thumbnail-size).
Cause 2: over-compressed JPG
You saved, re-opened, and saved again. Or you crushed quality to clear the **2 MB** mobile cap. Text edges turn to mush.
Export **once** at high quality. Prefer JPG around 70 to 85 for most stills. Use PNG when sharp text truly needs it, and only if you can still land under 2 MB for mobile. Cause 3: thin fonts after re-encode
Hairline and decorative type look fine on a 1280-wide canvas. After upload they die.

Cause 4: soft frame grab
You paused a compressed stream and exported the still. The source was already soft.
Pull a still from a **high-res local export**, then crop to 16:9. Do not grab from a 480p preview player if you can avoid it.
