How to add text to a YouTube thumbnail
Face is fine. The line dies at feed size. Here is how to add text that still reads at 168 to 360px: 3 to 5 words, contrast or outline, clear of the duration badge and progress strip.

Studio shows your thumb huge. Viewers see it at about **168 to 360 pixels** wide, with a duration badge and a progress strip eating the edges. Thin fonts and soft contrast vanish there.
This is the add-text path. It is not a remake of [YouTube thumbnail psychology](/blog/youtube-thumbnail-psychology), [YouTube thumbnail ideas](/blog/youtube-thumbnail-ideas), [how to make a YouTube thumbnail](/blog/how-to-make-a-youtube-thumbnail), [how to preview a YouTube thumbnail](/blog/how-to-preview-youtube-thumbnail), or [YouTube thumbnail safe zones](/blog/youtube-thumbnail-safe-zones). Those stay linked.
Why Studio-large text fails
You design at 1280 by 720. You judge at full width. That lies.
In Suggested and on Home the frame is small. Dark mode eats mid-gray. Hairline fonts turn into noise. A sentence that looked clever on the canvas becomes mush next to the title.
Dims and export caps stay in [YouTube thumbnail size](/blog/youtube-thumbnail-size) and [YouTube thumbnail file size](/blog/youtube-thumbnail-file-size). This post is only the line.
Aim for 3 to 5 words
Cut filler. Drop "how to" and "the ultimate" if the title already says it. Prefer nouns and short claims: "I broke it", "Zero dollars", "Before vs after".
Full sentences belong in the title. The thumb line should add one beat the title does not already carry.
If you need more than five words, you usually need a clearer subject, not more type.
Contrast before decoration
Light text on a dark plate. Dark text on a bright face key. Mid-gray on mid-gray is the most common fail.
Thin hairline fonts die first. Pick a bold or condensed weight that still has a clear silhouette at phone size.
Outline or a short drop shadow helps when the background is busy. A solid plate helps when the face is bright and white type would wash out. Skip both when the contrast is already clean. Stacking outline plus plate plus glow usually muddies the face.
Keep clear of YouTube chrome
Leave room for the duration badge and the bottom progress strip. That map lives in [YouTube thumbnail safe zones](/blog/youtube-thumbnail-safe-zones). Do not remake it here.
Put the line where a phone thumb will still see it after chrome. Top third or a clear side band often wins. Crossing the face mouth or eyes is a last resort, not a default.
Glance test, then soft Score
Before you publish, run the same habit as the [preview guide](/blog/how-to-preview-youtube-thumbnail): shrink to about 168 to 360 pixels wide, put the title underneath, glance in dark mode on your phone.
If the line fails, fix words or contrast. Do not add more effects.
Want a second pass on clarity? Run the export through [Thumbly Score](/thumbly-score). Soft generate or edit the line in [Thumbly Studio](/) when you are ready to ship.
